Temporary Revival
In 2022, studiososlow completed mass production of Plastic Sea.

Plastic Sea is based on the recalling and reconstruction of “old”, “abandoned” and “out-dated” objects, by which we intend to bring these objects back to the public eye in a manner that combines modernity and tradition. When considering how to present this new collection for mass production, we decided, along with photographer Yang Yanyuan, to continue exploring the urban landscape that alternated between old and new.

Yang Yanyuan found an ideal site in East Jinling Road demolition area. As East Jinling Road and its adjacent blocks, featuring historic Shanghai Arcade style, has been prepared for renovation. Historic buildings along the road will be renovated on the basis of appropriate reservation. Therefore, we decided to display Plastic Sea collection along the East Jinling Road at this point.
At this special time, buildings in the blocks indeed return to objects themselves, with all the entrances sealed with cement to form an enclosed landscape. Here the functionality of buildings completely gives way to materials and colors, as “entrances”, “walls” and”windows” become mere manifestations of materials. With combined classical patterns and modern materials, the whole building turns into a large sculpture.

We believe that the reconstruction of Plastic Sea collection and East Jinling Road share similar features. As this collection is originated from industrial waste discarded near a factory – through incision and rearrangement, we redesigned the traditional Europe-an-patterned cylinder forms that were “popular” about a decade ago. Blending the “past” with the “current”, we attempt to free Plastic Sea from constraints of time.
Studiososlow was founded in Shanghai by Liz and Yuchen in 2019.
We focus on discovering the lines, touch and sound in normal life, figuring these feelings as useful or useless objects.
